Forensic science is a way to use science to help solve legal problems. It uses many different methods to help people make decisions about the law.

Experts might look at fingerprints or DNA to find clues. They also study things like blood patterns and how guns work. Some scientists work in a lab with small samples. Others travel to a crime scene to collect evidence. Some even study computer data to find digital crimes. This work helps both the people accusing someone and the people defending them.

There are many different ways that forensic science works. One method is called chromatography, which helps separate parts of a mixture.

Scientists use this to identify drugs or liquids in a sample. Another part is toxicology, which is the study of poisons and drugs. Forensic toxicologists look at biological samples to see if harmful substances were used. They can help figure out if a person was poisoned or had an overdose. This science helps turn tiny traces into important information.

People have used early versions of these ideas for a very long time. In the year 1248, a man named Song Ci wrote a book in China.

He wrote about using medicine and insects to solve crimes. He even used sunlight and vinegar to see hidden injuries on bodies. In one case, he used flies to find a murder weapon. The flies gathered on a sickle that belonged to the killer. This was one of the first written ways to use science for justice.

As time went on, more people began to study science and the body. In the 16th century, a French surgeon named Ambroise Paré studied how injuries affect organs.

Later, in 1773, a chemist named Carl Wilhelm Scheele found a way to test for arsenic. Arsenic is a dangerous poison. In 1832, James Marsh used a special test to find arsenic in a legal case. These discoveries helped move investigations away from using force and toward using logic.

Today, forensic science is a very important part of our world. It connects the lessons of the past to the technology of the future.

Scientists now use computers and databases to manage huge amounts of information. They are even learning new ways to use "forensic intelligence" to help police. This means they look at traces to understand how a crime happened. Forensic science helps make sure that the truth is found using facts and evidence.
