These facts help in court trials. This work is very old. The Code of Hammurabi once said people could show evidence.

Long ago, an English constable recorded facts. Today, police forces and private workers do this job. They use forensic science, which is a set of scientific ways to find clues. Investigators might search a place or talk to people. They may also collect and keep evidence.

Some workers use the "MMO" rule to find suspects. This stands for means, motive, and opportunity. Means means having the tools to do a crime. Motive means having a reason, like money. Opportunity means being at the scene at the right time. If someone has an alibi, they may not be a suspect.

Sometimes, investigators must choose which crimes to study first. This can be hard if they have little money. Some experts worry that focusing on certain groups can hide other crimes. They think new ways might help find more truth.
