People stand in one or more rows or lines. Most dancers face the same direction, but sometimes they face each other. Unlike circle dancing, these dancers do not touch one another. They follow a repeating set of steps to a specific song. This makes the dance feel like a shared discovery. People practice this in many places like social clubs or ballrooms.

Dancers use a concept called "walls" to guide their movements. A wall is simply the direction a person faces at a certain time. They might face the front, the back, or a side. In a one-wall dance, dancers end the sequence facing the same way they started. A two-wall dance, like the samba, involves a 180-degree turn. This means dancers face the back or the front. In a four-wall dance, dancers turn 90 degrees to face a new side. The hustle is a well-known example of this four-wall style.

The history of these dances is quite a mystery. Music historian Christy Lane says people often give different answers about when it began. Many steps likely came from European immigrants in the 1800s. Between 1860 and 1890, country-western dance began to emerge from those traditions. Later, soldiers returning from World War I and World War II brought more European dances to America. In the 1900s, schools even used folk dancing in physical education classes. This helped make social dancing a popular activity for many people.

Many famous dances have helped line dancing grow over the years. The Madison was a novelty dance from Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. During the 1970s, the disco era brought many new styles. The Electric Slide became popular due to the song "Electric Boogie." This song was written by Bunny Wailer for Marcia Griffiths in 1982. In the 1990s, the song "Achy Breaky Heart" helped country dancing become very famous. Even the Spanish song "Macarena" inspired a huge dance hit.

Today, line dancing connects many different types of music and people. It is not just for country music anymore. Modern line dance clubs use pop, Latin, Irish, and big band music. Dancers often wear casual clothes and comfortable trainers instead of cowboy boots. In 2014, Durham, North Carolina, was even called the line dancing capital of America. People all over the world join in to share these rhythms. It is a way to bring many different cultures together through movement.
