People stand in rows or lines. They do the same steps to a song. They do not touch each other. Most dancers face the same way.

Dancers use walls to find their way. A wall is the direction they face. In a one-wall dance, they face the same way each time. In a two-wall dance, they turn halfway. The samba is an example. In a four-wall dance, they turn a quarter turn. The hustle is a four-wall dance.

Many songs have famous dances. The Macarena and the Electric Slide are very popular. Some dances use country music. Others use pop, disco, or jazz. People dance in clubs or at social events. They often wear casual clothes and dance shoes.

Line dancing has a long history. Some steps may come from old dances brought to America. The Madison was a famous dance from 1957. In the 1990s, the song "Achy Breaky Heart" made country line dancing very popular. Today, people dance to many kinds of music all over the world.
