People call these dance crazes or dance fads. They are very popular for a short time. In the 1950s and 1960s, new dances appeared almost every week. Many came from African-American dancers in big U.S. cities. These dancers worked in clubs in New York and Detroit.

Some dances have fun names like animals. You might do the Pony or the Chicken. Other dances have names like the Swim or the Mashed Potato.

You can dance these moves by yourself. You can also dance with a partner or in a large group.

Music helps these dances grow. Some songs are written just to start a dance. The song "The Loco-Motion" was made for this. Other hits, like "Mashed Potato Time," were made to follow a popular dance. These dances can last a long time. The Twist and the Y.M.C.A. are still known today. When people see old dances, it can bring back happy memories.
