People do not dance to put on a show. They dance to meet friends or to have fun. Some people dance in a big circle. Others dance in a long line.

In the past, many dances were for rich people in courts. They used dance to show their social rank. In the 1800s, the waltz became very popular. It was a partner dance. In the waltz, partners danced as equals. This was a new idea at that time. Later, the One-Step became a big hit in America. Couples took one step on every beat of the music. This made it easy for beginners to join in. In the 1950s, many people loved Latin dances. Styles like the mambo and the cha-cha-chá became very famous. These dances came from places like Cuba. In Cuba, many different cultures mixed to make these dances. Later, salsa became a big part of life in many cities. Today, people still go to salsa congresses. These are large festivals with workshops and dancing.
