The name means to roll or revolve. It uses a triple time beat. This means the music has a steady three-part rhythm.

Many people dance in a closed position. This means the partners hold each other very close.

The dance began in German-speaking lands during the 1700s. At first, it was a dance for common people. It grew from country dances like the Ländler.

Later, the waltz became very popular in Vienna. Some people in high society thought it was improper. They felt the close hold was too much. By the 1800s, it became a famous fashion in England.

Today, there are many ways to waltz. The Viennese waltz is very fast. The Slow waltz is much calmer. In the American Style, partners can even let go of each other. They might do a free spin. Some styles, like the Country Western waltz, use a relaxed posture. It is a dance that people still love to share.
