These dances grew with jazz music. They started between the 1920s and 1940s. Most swing dances began in African-American communities.

One famous style is the Lindy Hop. It started in Harlem in the early 1930s. This dance has a lot of energy. It uses an eight-count move called a "swingout." This move goes from an open position to a closed position.

Some people say the name came from a pilot named Charles Lindbergh.

There are many other styles to try. The Charleston can be done alone or with a partner. The Shag is a very popular dance. It likely started in the Carolinas. Balboa is another style. It is often very fast. Some dancers do "Pure Balboa" with an upright posture. Others do "Bal-Swing" with spins and dips.

People still love these dances today. Some people dance for fun at parties. Others dance in big contests. You can find swing styles all over the world. Some styles are even popular in Europe. It is a great way to move and be together.
