It began in the United States in the 1920s. By the mid-1930s, it became very popular. Swing is known for its strong, driving beat. This rhythm makes people want to dance. Many people danced the Lindy Hop to this music.

Large groups called big bands often played swing.

These bands had brass and woodwind sections. The musicians used a style called call-and-response. This is when one group plays and another answers. Soloists also played special parts. A soloist is a person who plays alone to show their skill. They often improvise. This means they make up new notes while playing the melody.

Many famous leaders led these big bands. Benny Goodman was a very famous leader. His success helped start the swing era. Other great leaders included Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Swing even mixed with other music styles. It blended with country music to make western swing. It also mixed with blues. A guitarist named Django Reinhardt made gypsy swing.
