arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Swing music is a lively style of jazz that makes people want to move. It started in the United States during the late 1920s and early 1930s. By the middle of the 1930s, it became a huge hit across the whole country. This music is known for having a strong groove or a driving feeling. When musicians play with this special energy, people say they "swing."

During the most famous years, known as the swing era, people loved dancing to it. One very popular dance style from this time was called the Lindy Hop.

Swing music often features large groups called big bands. These bands use different sections of instruments, like brass and woodwinds. One common way they play is through call-and-response. This is when one group of instruments plays a part and another group answers back.

A typical song might start with a theme to set the mood. Then, the band provides special parts for soloists to play. These soloists often improvise, which means they make up new musical ideas on the spot. Some songs even end with a big, exciting finish called an out-chorus.

The roots of swing grew from dance music in the 1920s. Musicians like Louis Armstrong and Benny Carter helped create new rhythmic ideas. Fletcher Henderson's orchestra was very important during this time. They used new ways to arrange music for their bands.

In 1924, Louis Armstrong joined the Henderson band. He helped put even more focus on the soloists. Other famous musicians like Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter also helped shape the sound. Their work helped move jazz toward the swing style we recognize.

Many talented leaders guided the big bands of the swing era. Benny Goodman became very famous after a successful show at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935. Other great leaders included Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Cab Calloway. There were also many others like Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Ella Fitzgerald.

The swing era lasted from about 1935 until 1946. During the 1930s, the Great Depression made things hard for some bands. However, the music stayed popular through radio broadcasts and new recordings. Even as swing began to fade after World War II, it left a lasting mark.

Swing has blended with many other kinds of music over the years. In country music, artists like Bob Wills helped create a style called western swing. A famous guitarist named Django Reinhardt even created gypsy swing music. He even wrote a well-known song called "Minor Swing."

Later, in the 1980s, a new style called new jack swing emerged. In the late 1990s, there was even a swing revival with bands like the Brian Setzer Orchestra. This shows how the energy of swing keeps finding new ways to live on.
