He was a pianist, a composer, and a bandleader. He helped create the sound of big band swing music. This music was exciting and great for dancing. People often called him "Smack" Henderson because of sounds he made with his lips. He was known for his great skill in arranging music. An arranger is someone who writes down how a whole band should play together. Henderson is remembered as one of the most influential figures in jazz history.

His way of making music changed how bands worked.

Along with Don Redman, he created a new formula for swing. He split the large orchestra into different sections. There was a saxophone section and a trumpet section. These groups worked together to make a special sound. Sometimes one section would play a part, and another section would answer them in a "call-and-response" style. Other times, one group played simple patterns called riffs behind another group. This helped move jazz from old styles toward the new swing era.

Fletcher's journey began in Cuthbert, Georgia.

He was born in 1897 into a middle-class African-American family. His father was a school principal and built their family home. His mother was a teacher who taught him piano at age six. Fletcher was very good at reading music and sensing pitch. He even studied math and chemistry at Atlanta University. He graduated with a degree in 1920 before moving to New York City.

In New York, Henderson's musical career truly took off.

He worked as a musical director for Black Swan Records from 1921 to 1923. In 1924, his group became the house band at the Club Alabam. This was his first real working band. He also brought the famous trumpeter Louis Armstrong to New York in October 1924. This move helped change where the center of jazz was located. Henderson recorded for many different companies, including Columbia and Brunswick. He even recorded 80 different musical pieces in the year 1924 alone.

Henderson's work connected different worlds of music. He helped bring jazz styles from New Orleans to New York City. His bands were special because they could play both dance music and very complex arrangements. Many famous musicians, like Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter, played in his orchestras. Even when he faced hard times, his music helped others. The famous bandleader Benny Goodman bought many of Henderson's musical papers to use in his own shows. Henderson's talent helped bridge the gap between the old Dixieland style and the new swing era.
