Born in New York City in 1907, he became a master of many instruments. He was a pioneer on the alto saxophone, playing it with incredible skill. Carter also played the trumpet, clarinet, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, and piano. He was so talented that he could lead big bands and play solos on different instruments. His musical career was quite rare because it lasted for eight different decades. He stayed active in the music world from the 1920s all the way into the 1990s.

Carter was also a famous arranger, which means he wrote the musical parts for entire bands. He did not learn this in a formal school. Instead, he learned through trial and error. In his early days, he would look at existing musical charts to learn. He often wrote the parts for the lead trumpet and lead saxophone first. This was a very hard way to learn, but it worked. His arrangements were known for being complex and beautiful. He wrote famous pieces like "Keep a Song in Your Soul" in 1930 for Fletcher Henderson's big band.

His journey took him all around the world. In the 1930s, he moved to London to work for the BBC Big Band. While in Europe, he recorded with local musicians in places like France and Scandinavia. He even took his band to the Netherlands. In 1938, he traveled to Paris to record with the musician Django Reinhardt. Later in his life, he toured the Middle East for the U.S. State Department. He also made regular trips to visit fans in Japan and Europe.

He also wrote arrangements for legendary singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Ray Charles. As he grew older, he shared his knowledge by teaching. He spent nine years visiting Princeton University to teach music. In 1974, the university gave him an honorary doctorate to honor his talent.

Because of his amazing life, Carter received many high honors. He won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. He also received the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton in 2000. Carter was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1977. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Even when he was 85 years old, he was still composing new music. He passed away in Los Angeles in 2003 at the age of 95.
