Gerry Mulligan was a famous American jazz musician. He was a master of many different instruments. He played the piano and the clarinet. Most people know him for the baritone saxophone. This is a very large saxophone. He played it with a light and airy tone. This style became a big part of cool jazz.

He was also a talented arranger. An arranger is someone who writes music for a band. He worked with many famous leaders like Claude Thornhill and Miles Davis. He helped create a new sound in jazz history.

One of his most famous works was with Miles Davis. In 1948, Davis formed a nine-piece band. This group used music written by Mulligan and others. They recorded twelve pieces for Capitol Records. These songs were later put on an album called Birth of the Cool. It was released in 1957. Mulligan wrote three of the tunes, including one named "Jeru." He also arranged three more. He was one of only four musicians who played on every single recording.

In the early 1950s, Mulligan moved to Los Angeles. He began writing for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. While there, he played at a small club called The Haig. This is where he started a special group called a pianoless quartet. This group had no piano to play chords. It used a trumpet, a bass, and drums instead.

This way of playing allowed the music to feel very free. It was a new way to make jazz sounds.

This special quartet featured a trumpeter named Chet Baker. Even though they came from different backgrounds, they played very well together. Mulligan was classically trained in New York. Baker was mostly self-taught from Oklahoma. They had a special connection when they improvised music. Their shows at The Haig were very popular and sold out.

They even recorded their music for the Pacific Jazz label. However, their time working together ended in 1953 when Mulligan went to prison. He was arrested on charges involving narcotics.

Throughout his long career, Mulligan stayed very busy. He worked with many legends like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. He also formed his own Concert Jazz Band in 1960. He wrote many songs that became jazz standards. These include "Walkin' Shoes" and "Five Brothers."
