He had a style that was unlike anyone else in the world. His music used sharp, unexpected notes and sudden silences. He would often use a percussive way of hitting the keys. Sometimes he would even stand up and dance during a performance.

People loved him for his unique way of thinking and playing. He was a leader in the modern jazz movement.

Learning to play music was a big part of his life. Monk began playing the piano when he was nine years old. He first took lessons from a neighbor named Alberta Simmons. She taught him the stride style of famous players like Fats Waller. Later, he studied classical piano with a teacher named Simon Wolf. He learned pieces by great composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. However, his true passion was always jazz music. He even played the church organ when he was a teenager.

Monk's career began in the early years of the 1940s. He worked as the house pianist at Minton's Playhouse in Manhattan. This nightclub was a very important place for jazz musicians. While playing there, he helped create a style called bebop. He played with many famous leaders like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. In 1944, he made his first commercial recordings with Coleman Hawkins. He also worked with the Blue Note record label starting in 1947. These sessions showed the world his talent for writing original melodies.
