He was a master of the saxophone. He was also a bandleader and a composer. People consider him one of the most important figures in jazz history. His music changed how people thought about sound. He helped lead new styles like free jazz. He also used modes, which are specific scales, in his playing. His music eventually took on a deep spiritual feeling. This is seen in his famous album, A Love Supreme, from 1965.

Coltrane worked very hard to master his craft. He was known for practicing for many hours every day. Some people said he practiced "25 hours a day." He was so dedicated that he sometimes fell asleep with his saxophone in his mouth. He even practiced fingering notes for an hour at a time. He moved from playing the alto saxophone to the tenor saxophone in 1947. Later, he began playing the soprano saxophone. This was an unusual choice for jazz musicians at that time.

His journey began in Hamlet, North Carolina. He was born there on September 23, 1926. His parents were John R. Coltrane and Alice Blair. After high school, he moved to Philadelphia in 1943. His mother bought him his first alto saxophone for his 17th birthday. He studied music at the Ornstein School of Music. He also used the G.I. Bill to study music theory later on. These early years helped him build a strong musical foundation.

Coltrane served in the Navy during World War II.

He was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. While in the Navy, he joined a band called the Melody Masters. He made his first recordings in Hawaii on July 13, 1946. He played jazz standards and bebop tunes during these sessions. He later received medals for his service in the war. These experiences helped him grow as a professional musician.

Many great musicians played alongside him. He worked with the famous trumpeter Miles Davis.

He also played with the pianist Thelonious Monk. A critic once used the term "sheets of sound" to describe his fast playing. His music was full of many notes played very quickly.
