It is often called a "definitive tone poem." Many people think it is one of the greatest jazz masterpieces ever made. The music is known for being very spiritual and intense. Some listeners feel it shows a deep sense of devotion. It can even sound like people speaking in tongues. This sacred feeling makes it very important to many people.

The album is a suite made of four distinct parts. These parts are named "Acknowledgement," "Resolution," "Pursuance," and "Psalm." The first part begins with a loud gong and cymbal sounds. Then, Jimmy Garrison plays a four-note theme on the double bass.

Coltrane plays his tenor saxophone over this foundation. He repeats the four notes thirty-six times during his solo. He also sings the words "a love supreme" nineteen times. In the final part, he performs a "musical narration." He plays the words of a poem without actually speaking them.

Coltrane recorded this music in a single session. This happened on December 9, 1964. The session took place at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey.

This album was a huge success for Coltrane. By 1970, it had sold about 500,000 copies. This was much higher than his usual sales of 30,000.
