A Love Supreme is a landmark jazz album by saxophonist and composer John Coltrane.

It is often described as a "definitive tone poem." Many music historians consider it one of the greatest masterpieces in jazz history. The album is a through-composed suite, which means it is a set of musical pieces designed to be heard together as one continuous work. It carries a deep sense of spiritual intensity. Some listeners compare its sound to glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, because it conveys ecstatic devotion. This sacred quality led the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco to use it as a "central text."

The suite is divided into four distinct movements. These parts are named "Acknowledgement," "Resolution," "Pursuance," and "Psalm." In the first movement, "Acknowledgement," the music begins with the strike of a gong, also called a tam-tam, and cymbal washes. Jimmy Garrison provides a foundation using a four-note motif on the double bass.

Coltrane plays his tenor saxophone, repeating these four notes thirty-six times. He also uses overdubs to sing the phrase "a love supreme" nineteen times. The final movement, "Psalm," features a "musical narration." In this part, Coltrane performs a "wordless recitation" where he plays the words of a poem on his saxophone without speaking them.

Coltrane recorded the album in a single session on December 9, 1964. This session took place at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. He was joined by his classic quartet. McCoy Tyner played the piano.

The album was released by Impulse! Records in January 1965. While the main album is famous, other versions exist. For example, a session on December 10 included Archie Shepp on saxophone and Art Davis on bass. These alternate takes were eventually released in deluxe editions.

Music historians categorize the album under several styles. It is described as modal jazz, avant-garde jazz, free jazz, hard bop, and post-bop. Some critics, like Nick Dedina, even describe it as a form of gospel music. This variety of styles makes the music both uncompromising and accessible. The album's structure is highly organized. Critic Tom Hull has called it the most perfectly plotted single piece of jazz ever recorded. The music serves as an expression of gratitude and a struggle for purity. It reflects the idea that a musician's talent comes from a higher power.

The commercial and cultural impact of the album was massive. By 1970, A Love Supreme had sold approximately 500,000 copies. This was a huge increase compared to Coltrane's typical sales of 30,000 copies.

It has appeared on many prestigious lists. Rolling Stone ranked it number 47 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2015, the album was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry. This honor recognizes its cultural, historic, and artistic significance. Additionally, the original manuscript is held in the Smithsonian Institution's "Treasures of American History" collection.

Many famous musicians have been influenced by Coltrane's work. The guitarist Carlos Santana has cited the album as one of his biggest early influences.

The rock band U2 has also mentioned the album in their song "Angel of Harlem." Even the band The Divine Comedy has noted its unique combination of abstract piano and wailing saxophone. Some listeners, such as those in the hippie movement, found the record's message of peace very compelling. It has left a lasting mark on both the jazz and rock genres.

Today, A Love Supreme remains a subject of deep study and debate. Scholars analyze it for its religious subtext and spiritual themes. Others look at it through the lens of cultural studies. There are also different ways to experience the music through various releases. Impulse! Records has issued several versions over the years. These include a 2002 deluxe edition with live recordings from France. They also released a three-disc complete masters edition in 2015. Most recently, a live performance from Seattle was released in 2021. These recordings allow listeners to hear the suite in different settings and styles.
