He was a leader in a style called cool jazz. His music was special because he mixed different styles together. He combined jazz with classical music and the blues. Brubeck also used unusual time signatures in his songs. This means the beat felt different than most music. He could play music that was very smooth or very loud.

Brubeck worked with a famous group called the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

The most famous members joined between 1958 and 1967. This group included Paul Desmond on the saxophone. It also had Eugene Wright on the bass and Joe Morello on the drums. In 1959, they released a very important album called Time Out. This album used many nonstandard rhythms. It was the first jazz album to sell over one million copies. The song "Take Five" became the highest-selling jazz single ever.

Brubeck's musical journey began in California.

He was born in Concord on December 6, 1920. His mother was a piano teacher who studied in England. Brubeck actually started college to study veterinary science. He wanted to work on his father's cattle ranch. However, a professor told him his mind belonged in music. He switched his major to music and graduated from the College of the Pacific. During his time in the US Army, he played in a Red Cross show. This success helped him avoid combat service in Europe. He even formed one of the first racially diverse bands in the military.

Brubeck used his fame to stand up for what was right. He was a strong supporter of his bassist, Eugene Wright. In 1960, Brubeck canceled a big tour in the American South. He did this because 22 schools would not let Wright perform. He also canceled a TV show to protect his band's fairness. Brubeck believed in being part of an integrated group. He wanted all his musicians to be treated with respect. This helped change how people saw jazz musicians in public.

Many people have honored Brubeck for his great talent.
