He was a major leader in the Black music scene in New York City during the 1910s. Some people even called him the "Martin Luther King of music." He believed that Black musicians should create their own unique art. He said their music was the product of their souls. This music was born from the history and experiences of his people. Europe was one of the first African-American musicians to become part of the mainstream music world.

In 1910, Europe organized a group called the Clef Club. This was a special society for Black Americans working in the music industry. The Clef Club Orchestra was a large symphonic band with 125 members. In 1912, they made history by playing a concert at Carnegie Hall. They played music written only by Black composers like Harry T. Burleigh. This event was a huge moment for the history of jazz in the United States. It happened many years before other famous jazz concerts at that same hall.

Europe moved to New York in 1904 after growing up in Alabama.

He was born in Mobile to Henry Jefferson Europe and Loraine Saxon. His family moved to Washington, D.C., when he was ten years old. Later, he had a son named James Reese Europe Jr. Europe also worked with famous dancers named Irene and Vernon Castle. He co-composed many songs for them, such as "The Castle Walk." These songs helped make his name even more famous.

During World War I, Europe served as a second lieutenant in the army. He was part of the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters." He led a machine gun company and also directed the regimental band. The unit fought in France for 191 days of combat. This was more combat than any other American regiment in the war. Europe was the first African-American officer to lead troops into battle during this war. His band traveled over 2,000 miles in France to play for many people. Their music helped people feel better during the hard times of the war.

Europe's life ended very suddenly in May 1919. He was performing a concert in Boston when a musician stabbed him.

Even after he was hurt, he told his band to finish the music. He died a few hours later at the hospital. New York City held the first public funeral ever for a Black American. People felt he had changed the lives of many musicians in the city. He helped move Black musicians from service jobs into important roles as real artists. His legacy lives on through the music he helped create.
