He had a voice that sounded smooth and velvety. He could sing very high notes without losing any power. He could also add a soft, raspy sound to his singing. This allowed him to sing many different types of music beautifully. He could sound classical on jazz songs or soulful on R&B tracks.

Cooke's musical journey began in the church. He was the fifth of eight children born to a minister and a former singer.

At just six years old, he sang with his siblings in a group called the Singing Children. As a teenager, he became the lead singer for a gospel group called the Highway Q.C.'s. In 1950, he joined The Soul Stirrers as their lead singer. He helped bring gospel music to younger listeners. He even wrote some of the songs the group recorded, like "Jesus Gave Me Water."

Eventually, Cooke wanted to try pop music. In 1956, he released a song called "Lovable" using the name "Dale Cook." He did this to avoid upsetting his gospel fans. He later added an "e" to his last name in 1958 for a fresh start. His first big pop hit was "You Send Me" in 1957. This song stayed at number one on the charts for several weeks. It helped him earn much more money for his talent. He went on to have many more hits like "Cupid" and "Twistin' the Night Away."

He was shot and killed at a motel in Los Angeles. Even though he is gone, his music still inspires many people. Famous singers like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder were influenced by his great skill. He remains one of the most important artists in music history.
