Sam Cooke was a legendary American singer and songwriter. He is widely considered one of the most influential artists in the history of music. Many people call him the "King of Soul" because of his unique vocals. He helped pioneer the soul music genre. His work bridged the gap between gospel and pop music. This helped shape the sound of popular music for decades to come.

Cooke possessed a very distinctive tenor voice. His singing was often described as big, velvety, and expansive. He had a remarkable ability to sing as high as a high C. He could reach these notes without losing any purity or volume. His upper mid-range often featured a unique, soft rasp. This vocal versatility allowed him to adapt to many styles. He could sound classical on jazz tracks or deeply soulful on R&B songs.

Cooke eventually sought success in the pop music market. In 1956, he released the song "Lovable" under the name "Dale Cook." He used this alias to avoid upsetting his gospel fans. This song spent six weeks at number one on the R&B chart. It also spent three weeks at number one on the pop chart.
