Lee "Scratch" Perry

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Lee "Scratch" Perry was a highly influential Jamaican record producer, songwriter, and singer.

He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of dub music during the 1970s. Dub is a style that uses remixing and various studio effects to create new versions of existing reggae tracks. Perry was famous for his innovative production style and his eccentric personality. He worked with many legendary artists, including Bob Marley and the Wailers. His creative influence reached far beyond Jamaica, touching many different musical genres.

Perry's approach to music involved a unique process of studio experimentation. He often used basic recording equipment to create complex sounds through sonic sleight-of-hand. This means he used clever techniques to make simple tools produce extraordinary results. He was known to stay in the studio for many days at a time. During these sessions, he would refuse all visitors and phone calls. He would focus entirely on mixing his music, sometimes going without much food or drink. He even used ritualistic methods, such as blowing smoke into microphones, to influence the sound of a song.

His career can be divided into several distinct stages of musical evolution. In the late 1950s, he worked as a record seller for Clement Coxsone Dodd's sound system. He later worked at Studio One and Amalgamated Records before starting his own label. In 1968, he formed Upsetter Records, which became a major part of his legacy. His first big hit on this label was "People Funny Boy." This track was notable for using a sample of a crying baby. It also featured a fast, chugging beat that helped define the reggae sound.

One of the most important periods of his life began in 1973. This was when he built a private studio in his backyard called the Black Ark. This studio allowed him to have total control over his productions. He released music through his own Black Art label during this time. The Black Ark became a central location for high-quality reggae history. However, the studio eventually fell into disrepair and burned to the ground. Perry claimed he burned the building himself during a fit of rage.

Following the loss of the Black Ark, Perry's career entered a period of global movement. He spent time performing in England and the United States. In the late 1980s, he began working with British producers like Adrian Sherwood and Neil Fraser. This collaboration helped his career return to solid ground. He also experienced a creative resurgence after choosing to quit drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis. He realized that his talent came from himself rather than from substances. This shift allowed him to continue making music for many more decades.

Perry's success is reflected in many impressive numbers and awards. In 2003, he won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for "Jamaican E.T." In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him as the 100th greatest artist of all time. His music also saw massive commercial success in the United Kingdom. His instrumental track "The Return of Django" reached the top five in 1969. Even much later, his album "Super Ape Returns to Conquer" reached number two on the iTunes US reggae chart. These milestones show his lasting impact on the global music industry.

The reach of Perry's work connects to many different modern musical systems. He collaborated with the Beastie Boys on their 1998 album "Hello Nasty." He also influenced the dubstep genre through collaborations with Dubblestandart and Subatomic Sound System. His music has even been featured in digital media, such as the radio station "The Blue Ark" in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. From art exhibitions in Los Angeles to major festivals like Coachella, Perry's life remained a constant source of creative energy. His ability to blend different styles ensured his place in musical history.
