In the early 1970s, Green had a massive amount of success. He worked with the Hi Rhythm Section to make great records. His song "Let's Stay Together" reached number one on the charts. He also had big hits like "Tired of Being Alone" and "Love and Happiness." His album "I'm Still in Love with You" went platinum. This means it sold a huge number of copies. He released many gold singles during this busy time.

His life took a big turn in the late 1970s. He faced some very hard personal times and struggles. In 1979, he fell off a stage while performing in Cincinnati. He felt this was a message from God. Because of this, he decided to become a minister. He focused on pastoring his church and singing gospel music. He released many gospel albums between 1981 and 1989. One of these songs won him his first Grammy Award.

Even after focusing on church, Green kept making music. He returned to secular music, which is music for everyone, in 1988. He sang a song called "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" with Annie Lennox. This became his first top-10 pop hit in many years. He has also worked with many modern artists. In 2008, his album "Lay It Down" reached the top 10 again. He continues to be a very important figure in music history.
