They were a trio of sisters who sang jazz and swing music. Their names were Martha, Connie, and Helvetia, who was often called "Vet." They were famous for their close harmony singing. This means their voices blended together in a very tight way. They were special because they helped make jazz music popular for everyone.

The sisters had a very unique way of performing. They used many musical tricks to make their songs exciting. They used scat, which is singing with nonsense sounds. They also used "Boswellese," which was a type of gibberish singing. They could mimic the sounds of musical instruments with their voices. They even changed the speed and the key of a song while they were singing it. This made their music sound very different from other groups.

Music was a big part of their childhood in New Orleans.

Their parents loved to sing in a group called a barbershop quartet. The sisters studied classical music like piano, cello, and violin. Martha played the piano, Vet played the banjo and guitar, and Connie played the saxophone and trombone. They also learned a lot from the jazz music in their city. They listened to many different types of singers and street musicians.

The sisters became very famous during the 1930s. They started performing in local theaters and on the radio. They moved to California and worked on many radio programs. They even sang in Hollywood movies like "Let's Go Places." In 1925, they made their very first recordings. These early recordings used a primitive horn to catch the sound. By 1930, they were recording many songs for famous record companies.

The Boswell Sisters worked with many great jazz musicians. They played with famous stars like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. These musicians were part of the big band sound of that time. Their music helped bring different styles of music together. Even after the group split up in 1936, Connie continued to sing. She performed on radio, film, and television for many years. Their talent left a lasting mark on American music.
