A girl group is a music act with three or more female singers. Most of these singers work together to create harmonies. This means their voices blend to make a rich sound.

While some people use the term "girl band" for groups that play instruments, most girl groups focus on singing. These groups bring people together through music. They share stories and feelings with their fans. This connection makes them very special in the music world.

To make this music, groups often practice blending their voices. Some early groups used styles like barbershop or novelty tunes. In the 1950s, the "girl group sound" began to emerge. It mixed doo-wop, rock and roll, and pop music. Producers like Phil Spector used a method called the "Wall of Sound." This used many layers of instruments to create a powerful feeling.

Girl groups have a long and interesting history. The Hamilton Sisters and Fordyce were an early American trio. They toured Europe in 1927 and recorded for the BBC. Later, the Three X Sisters stayed popular even during the Great Depression. The Andrews Sisters started in 1937 as a tribute band. They became the most successful group in terms of hits and movies.

Many groups have reached huge numbers on the music charts. Between 1960 and 1966, 750 different groups reached the US and UK charts. The Supremes were incredibly successful during this time. They had 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. They even rivaled the Beatles in popularity. In the 1990s, the Spice Girls helped change the audience. They shifted the focus from male fans to more female fans.
