To help his children, David signed Benny up for free music classes in 1919. Benny was only ten years old then. He was given a clarinet to play. He also took private lessons from a professional player. This training helped him become a great musician very quickly.

His career took off in the 1930s. In 1935, his band played at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. The crowd loved the new swing music. They cheered and danced with great energy. This event is often seen as the start of the Swing Era.

Goodman did something very brave during a difficult time. In the 1930s, many places kept people apart because of their race. This was called racial segregation. Goodman led some of the first mixed groups in jazz. His trio and quartet included musicians of different races.
