Jazz dance is a lively and expressive way to move. It began in the United States during the early 20th century. This dance style has many different forms. Some people call it vernacular jazz, which comes from everyday life. Other people call it dramatic jazz when it is performed on a stage.

Many styles grow from African American traditions. These traditions connect back to African dance. Those early dances used bent knees and complex rhythms. Dancers also used isolations, which means moving one part of the body alone. This makes the dance feel very dynamic and full of life.

There are many ways to perform jazz dance. One way is through improvisation. This is when a dancer makes up moves as they go. They might use a technique called "riffing" to add their own style to a pattern. This lets dancers show their own feelings and stories.

Another way is through specific social dances. The Charleston is a famous dance with twisting steps. It uses hand clapping and foot stamping. The Lindy hop is a wild partner dance. It is very rhythmic and spontaneous. Some people even dance the shimmy by shaking their shoulders quickly.

The history of jazz dance is very rich. In the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance celebrated black art and music. Famous dancers like Josephine Baker became stars during this time. She was known for her unique costumes and style.

In 1931, the New Negro Art Theatre held a special recital. It used dances based on Southern spirituals to show black life. Dancers like Hemsley Winfield helped show the importance of this heritage. Later, in the 1940s, Hollywood movies began using the term "jazz dance" more often. This helped bring these movements to even more people around the world.

Many important people helped shape jazz dance. Jack Cole helped make jazz a big part of Broadway. Bob Fosse was a famous director who used very recognizable moves. Katherine Dunham was a pioneer who created her own technique. She opened schools in New York where famous actors studied.

Eugene Louis Faccuito, known as Luigi, created the first organized jazz technique. Other dancers like Gus Giordano were known for very precise movements. Even today, people like Mandy Moore and Sonya Tayeh create new jazz dances. These dancers keep the tradition moving forward with new ideas.

Today, you can see jazz dance in many places. You might see it in a pop music video. This is often called commercial jazz. It sometimes combines jazz with hip hop.

You can also find Latin jazz, which focuses on moving the hips. Some students even study jazz in college classes. They might dance to pop music or even electroswing. This is a style that mixes jazz with electronic music. Jazz dance connects the past to the present through music and movement.
