Some versions of the dance are very acrobatic. The Lindy Hop is a main part of this style. It can be done as a single dance or a double dance. Dancers often perform choreographed moves that they practice in advance. This is different from just dancing socially with friends. The moves can be fast and jumpy. Some people even call it a frenetic way to dance. It requires a lot of strength and skill.

This dance began in African-American communities in New York City.

It grew from dances at juke joints and dance halls. The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem was a very important place. This ballroom had a no-discrimination policy. This meant Black and white dancers could dance together. Famous dancers like George Snowden and Frank Manning helped the Lindy Hop flourish there. The term jitterbug was once used to tease people. It described dancers who were jumpier than intended, like "jittering bugs."

The dance became famous all over the world.

Hollywood films and Broadway shows helped spread it. A group called Whitey's Lindy Hoppers made it very popular. During World War II, American troops carried the dance to new places. In May 1944, nearly 1.6 million American troops were in Britain. They brought the dance to places like Britain and France. By 1946, the jitterbug was a huge craze in England. It was even used in dance competitions in Australia.

You can see how the jitterbug changed over time. In 1957, the show American Bandstand featured the dance on TV. It was one of the most popular fast dances then. Musicians like Bill Black played it in the 1960s. He played it alongside the twist and the cha-cha. The dance has a long history of connecting different people. It moved from dance halls to big stages and TV screens. Even today, we can look back at its energetic history. It remains a symbol of the swing era.
