arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Dance music is a special kind of sound made just for moving. It can be a whole song or just a part of a larger piece. People can enjoy this music when a band plays it live. They can also listen to it through recordings. For many people, dancing to a rhythm is a way to show who they are. It helps people feel like they belong to a group. Throughout history, people have used drums, bells, and rattles to create these beats.

There are many ways that dance music works. Some music is called folk dance music, which is used for traditional dances. In the United States, people play old-time music for square dances. Other music is made for big shows like ballet or opera. Today, many people use electronic dance music, or EDM. This music is made using computers and machines instead of physical instruments. It often uses a steady 4/4 beat to help people stay in time. Producers use tools like synthesizers to create many different sounds.

Music for dancing has a very long history. We can see drawings of dancers and musicians on old Greek vases. In the medieval times, people danced to songs called carols and the Estampie. During the Renaissance, musicians played instruments like the lute and the pipe. Later, the Baroque period featured noble court dances like the French courante. In the classical era, the minuet was a very famous dance style. The waltz also became popular during this time. Even the scherzo, which means "joke," grew out of the minuet.

Many famous styles of dance music appeared in the last century. In the 1920s, jazz music became very popular in nightclubs. The 1930s were known as the Swing era in America. In the 1950s, rock and roll became the main music for dancing. The late 1960s saw the rise of soul and R&B music. In the early 1970s, disco became a huge hit with the public. Disco uses parts of funk, soul, and pop music. One famous disco song is "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer.

Modern dance music connects to many different things we know today. You might hear electronic music at a nightclub, on the radio, or at a rave. There are many subgenres, which are smaller styles within a big group. For example, house music has many types like acid house and deep house. Drum & bass also has many forms, such as liquid funk. Some music is very fast and upbeat, like techno or trance. Other styles are much slower, like chillout or downtempo. No matter the style, the music helps people connect through rhythm.
