Bebop is a fast and exciting style of jazz music.

It began in the United States during the early to mid-1940s. Before this, most people listened to swing music. Swing was bouncy and perfect for dancing in big groups. However, a younger group of musicians wanted to try something different. They created a "musician's music" that was not meant for dancing. Instead, this music asks people to sit and listen very closely. It feels racing, nervous, and sometimes even fragmented to the ear.

Performing bebop follows a specific way of working.

Most groups use a small combo instead of a huge big band. These small groups often include a saxophone, trumpet, piano, drums, and a double bass. They usually start by playing a main melody called a "head." After the head, the musicians take turns playing solos. This is called improvisation, where they make up music on the spot. They use the chords of the song to guide their new melodies. Finally, the group plays the head one more time to finish.

Many people wonder where the name "bebop" actually came from.

Some say it comes from nonsense syllables used in scat singing. One early recording from 1928 used these silly sounds. Another idea is that the name came from a song by Thelonious Monk. Dizzy Gillespie said that audiences made up the name themselves. They would ask for "bebop" when they did not know a song's title. Others think it might come from the cry "Arriba! Arriba!" used by Latin American bandleaders.

Many incredible artists helped make this music famous.

Charlie Parker was a very important alto sax player. Dizzy Gillespie was a famous trumpeter who helped lead the style. Other great musicians include pianist Thelonious Monk and drummer Max Roach. There were also talented players like Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. These artists were often composer-performers who wrote their own complex music. They used fast tempos and very tricky chord changes to show their skill.

Bebop changed how musicians thought about rhythm and melody. It grew from trends that started in the swing era. For example, drummers began moving the beat from the bass drum to the ride cymbal. Musicians also started using the blues as a main foundation. This helped them create new sounds using special notes and rhythms. Some researchers believe these ideas came from African musical traditions. By focusing on the blues, bebop musicians found a brand new way to express themselves.
