Free jazz is a bold way of playing jazz music.

It began in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Musicians wanted to break old rules of music. They felt that older styles were too limiting. They wanted to create something totally new. This music is about expressing a musician's unique voice. Instead of following a composer, the player leads. It is a way to show deep emotion.

Some people call it creative music or art music. In Europe, people often call it free improvisation.

This music works by moving away from fixed patterns. Most jazz uses a steady beat or regular rhythm. Free jazz often does not have a regular meter. Instead, the rhythm can move like a wave. It might speed up or slow down quickly.

Musicians also stop using set chord changes. They use a way of playing called stream-of-consciousness. This means the melody flows naturally without a map. Players might use harsh sounds or loud honks. They do this to find new ways to use their instruments. This helps them explore the raw texture of the sound.

Great leaders helped start this musical movement. Ornette Coleman is one of the most important names. He recorded an album called Free Jazz in 1960.

This record used a double quartet of players. It had a very loud and busy sound. This album gave the whole style its name. Another key player was the pianist Cecil Taylor. He began moving toward this style in the early 1960s. He used new ideas to change how the piano sounded. He even used techniques from classical music to explore new tones.

Many different artists added to this growing world. Albert Ayler was an essential composer and performer. He used his saxophone to make unique squawks and honks.

He also liked to use simple, folk-like melodies. The famous saxophonist John Coltrane also explored these new ideas. In 1965, he recorded a piece called Ascension. This song used many horn players at once.

Musicians also looked to music from other lands. They used instruments like the West African talking drum. They even used ideas from Indian and Arabic music. This made the music feel very global.

Free jazz is connected to big changes in the world. During the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement was growing. Many people believe the music reflects these social tensions. The word "free" has a very deep meaning here. It can represent the struggle for freedom in America.

It was a musical reaction to the lives of Black Americans. Some critics once thought the music lacked skill. However, by 1974, many people saw it as a serious art. It remains a powerful way to share human experience.
