His music is special because it brings many different sounds together. He grew up in the busy port areas of Cape Town. There, he heard traditional African songs and church music. He also learned about Ragas and modern jazz. This mix of styles helped him lead a genre called Cape jazz. His music tells the story of his home and its many cultures.

Learning to play music was a big part of his life. Ibrahim started piano lessons when he was only seven years old. By the time he was 15, he was already performing professionally. His mother played the piano in a church, which shaped his sound. In his youth, he practiced many styles like marabi and mbaqanga. He even played in a group called the Jazz Epistles. In 1960, that group recorded the first full-length jazz album by Black South African musicians.

Ibrahim's life changed as he traveled to new places. He moved to Europe in 1962 and later to New York City in 1965. While living in the United States, he studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He met many great jazz musicians during this time. In 1968, he returned to Cape Town and converted to Islam. This was when he changed his name from Dollar Brand to Abdullah Ibrahim. He also went on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1970.

One of his most important works is a song called "Mannenberg." He recorded this piece in June 1974 in a Cape Town studio. The musicians played it all at once during a moment of improvisation. The song was inspired by the Cape Flats, a place where many people were forced to live. "Mannenberg" became a very famous anthem for the anti-apartheid movement. It helped people express their feelings during a difficult time in South Africa. It is now considered a very important part of the country's history.

Today, Ibrahim is known as a great teacher and performer. He has played in huge venues all over the world. He has even worked with large symphony orchestras. Nelson Mandela once called him "our Mozart" to show great respect. Ibrahim also helps new musicians by starting the M7 academy in Cape Town. He even started the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra in 2006. His music continues to celebrate the dignity of African culture for everyone to hear.
