Lounge music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lounge music is a type of easy listening music. It was very popular during the 1950s and 1960s. This music helps listeners feel calm and relaxed. It can make you feel like you are in a jungle or an island paradise. It can even make you feel like you are traveling through outer space.

People love it because it creates a special mood. Some styles use beautiful instrumentals without any singing at all.

There are many different ways to make this music. Some artists made a style called Exotica. They used instruments like bongos to sound like a far-away land. Some singers even made sounds like wild animals. Another style is called space age pop. This music uses special sounds that whoosh like a rocket.

Artists like Esquivel used new technology to make these sounds move around. They used large orchestras to create these amazing effects.

The history of this music goes back a long way. The earliest version appeared in the 1920s and 1930s. Back then, people called it light music. Lounge music grew from jazz and many other traditions. It borrowed sounds from places like Latin America and Polynesia.

Artists like Les Baxter and Martin Denny became very famous. They sold millions of records during their most popular years. Even though we call it lounge music now, that name was not used back then.

Many famous singers performed this music in hotels or bars. They often played in the big lounges of Las Vegas.

Famous names include Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Many women were also great lounge singers, like Nina Simone and Peggy Lee. Some musicians, like the Mary Kaye Trio, were pioneers in Las Vegas. Even the singer Billy Joel started his career in a piano bar. He even wrote the song "Piano Man" about his time working there.

Lounge music has come back into style many times. In the 1980s and 1990s, younger fans began to love it again.

Some bands today, like Pink Martini, still play this kind of music. Even rock bands like Arctic Monkeys have tried a lounge pop sound. You can even hear it in movies. Sometimes, it is used as funny music in comedies. It is a style that keeps connecting different kinds of music together.
