It started in the United States during the 1940s. Before bebop, many people loved swing music. Swing was bouncy and great for dancing. But younger musicians wanted to try new things. They made music for listening closely instead of dancing.

Bebop uses small groups called combos. These groups often have a saxophone, trumpet, piano, drums, and bass. The music moves very quickly. Musicians use a lot of skill to play fast notes. They often start with a main tune called a "head." Then, each player takes a turn making up new music. This is called improvisation. They play the head again at the end.

Many famous artists helped shape this sound. Charlie Parker was a great sax player. Dizzy Gillespie was a famous trumpeter. These artists used complex chords and rhythms. Some say the name "bebop" comes from silly words used in singing. It was a way to show off great talent.
