He played the saxophone, trumpet, and violin. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas. As a teen, he taught himself the saxophone.

Coleman changed how people played jazz. He helped start a style called free jazz. In this music, players do not always follow set rules. They do not always use the same chords or rhythms. Instead, they use a way of playing called improvisation. This means they make up music as they go. This was a new way to play together.

Some people did not like his new sound at first. They thought his music was too wild. But other famous musicians loved his ideas. He even played music with his son, Denardo. Denardo played the drums in his band.

Later, Coleman used electric instruments. He made music that had rock and funk beats. He called his own style harmolodics.
