Bluegrass uses only acoustic instruments. These are tools with strings that do not use power. Musicians play the fiddle, which is a small violin. They also play the banjo, the mandolin, and the guitar. A large upright bass helps keep the beat.

Many players take turns playing a solo. This means they play the main tune alone. While they do this, the other players provide accompaniment. This helps them support the leader. The music often has many voices singing at once. This is called vocal harmony. Some singers use a high, lonesome sound.

Songs often tell stories. They might be about life in rural areas. Some songs tell tales about trains or coal mines. People love to play this music together at jams. It is a way to share stories and skill.
