In a standard band, players work together in two groups. The front line uses a trumpet, a trombone, and a clarinet. The rhythm section uses tools like a banjo, piano, or drums.

The music has a very busy sound. This happens through polyphonic improvisation. That is a big word for many players making up tunes at once. Usually, the trumpet plays the main melody. Then, the other front line players improvise around it.

Different styles grew from this. Chicago style was faster and focused more on solos. In the Netherlands, bands played "Oude Stijl," or Old Style, jazz. These bands often used a tuba and a washboard.

Many famous songs are still played today. You might know "When the Saints Go Marching In." This music is still a big part of life in New Orleans. It even helped shape new styles like rock and roll.
