Many people call these songs pop standards. They are part of the Great American Songbook. This is a group of very famous songs. Writers for Broadway and Hollywood made them. Names like Irving Berlin and George Gershwin wrote these hits.

In the 1940s, this music became very popular. Singers like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby became big stars. Musicians added many string instruments to the songs. This made the music sound lush and rich. The singers were the most important part of the show.

When rock and roll arrived, things began to change. Many older singers moved to jazz or easy listening. Some stars stayed big in Las Vegas. Even country music in Nashville used these sounds.

In 1983, a singer named Linda Ronstadt tried something new. She recorded songs from the 1940s and 1950s. Her album was a big hit. It helped young people hear this old music. Other stars like Rod Stewart have also made these songs famous again.
