arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Jazz standards are special songs. Musicians play them very often. Many people know these tunes, too. There is no single list of these songs. The list can change over time. Some songs come from Broadway shows. Others come from popular songs called Tin Pan Alley hits. In Europe, some folk songs also become standards. A song is a standard if many jazz players play it.

Early jazz was made for dancing. Bands played songs to help people move. In the 1920s, people loved the Charleston dance. During the 1940s, a new style called bebop began. This music was fast and hard to play. Later, artists mixed jazz with rock music. This was called jazz fusion. Today, jazz standards keep the music alive.
