It was a group of music publishers on a street in New York City. This street was West 28th Street. Most of the business happened there starting around 1885.

People made sheet music for others to play. In those days, many families owned pianos. They would buy new songs to play at home. To sell these songs, people called "song pluggers" worked hard. They played and sang the tunes to show how good they were. Some even sang at big bike races to reach crowds!

The name "Tin Pan Alley" has a fun story. Some say it came from the sound of many cheap pianos. They all played different songs at once. This made a loud, tinny noise like banging tin pans in an alley.
