Some people study this connection. They call their work ethnomusicology. The word comes from "ethno," meaning people, and "musicology," the study of music.

These scholars do not just listen to sounds. They study music as a part of culture. They want to know how music reflects a way of life. To do this, they go on trips called fieldwork. They visit the people who make the music. They may live among them to learn.

Some researchers use a method called participant observation. This means they join in the music-making. They might learn to play a local instrument. This helps them understand the music from the inside. This idea is called bi-musicality.

Fieldworkers also collect many things. They make recordings and film performances. They write down song lyrics and myths. They might even study how instruments are made.
