Musicologists use many different tools. They work with science, history, and math. They might study how music sounds in a room. They may also study how music affects the brain. This can include music psychology. This branch looks at how we feel and think about music.

There are three main branches of musicology. One is music history. These experts study old songs and the lives of composers. They might look at a choir in a city like Leipzig. Another branch is ethnomusicology. These researchers study how people make music in their own cultures. They often travel to live with the people they study. The third branch is systematic musicology. This part looks at the science of music. It includes music theory, which is the study of musical rules. It also includes organology, which is the study of musical instruments.
