Scientists look at things people left behind. These items are called artifacts. They also study old buildings and sites.

Long ago, a king named Nabonidus was a first explorer. He found old items in Mesopotamia. He even tried to date them. In the 1700s, people found the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These towns were under ash from a volcano.

Archaeologists use many tools to learn. They use excavation, which means digging in the ground. They also use stratigraphy. This is a way to look at layers of soil. Each layer tells a story of a different time.

Augustus Pitt Rivers was a very careful worker. He said all items are important. He did not just save pretty things. He kept every small piece. William Flinders Petrie also helped a lot. He studied tiny details in Egypt. He used pottery to find out how old things were. Today, people still study the past to see how life changes.
