Game studies

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People study all kinds of games. This field is called game studies. Some call it ludology, which comes from the Latin word ludus. Ludus means game. This study looks at how we play. It looks at board games and sports. It also looks at video games.

Experts use many ways to study games. Some use social science. They look at how games affect our minds. They might use surveys to learn things. Others use the humanities. They look at the stories and meanings in games. Some experts study game design. They look at how to make new games.

There is a big debate in this field. Some people focus on stories. They call this narratology. They think games are like books. Other people focus on the rules and play. They think games are different because we control them. Some say we need both views.

Game studies also looks at history. Experts study old fun fairs and machines. They look at how games change over time. They even study digital worlds. For example, one expert looked at a game called World of Warcraft. They studied how a fake plague spread in that game. It helps us learn about our own world.
