Have you ever wondered how a game works? All games use game mechanics. These are the rules that guide how you play. They also tell the game how to react to your moves.

Mechanics can be many things. Some games use movement. You might move a token across a board. Other games use dice to add chance. Rolling dice can decide if you win or lose a fight.

You might also use set collection. This is when you gather items to make something new. Some games use crafting to do this. In games like Minecraft, you collect items to build things.

Some games use capture. This is when you remove an opponent's piece. You might jump over a piece to capture it. In some games, you can even take that piece for yourself.

Rules are not the same as the theme. A theme is what the game represents. Monopoly has a theme of buying property. But the mechanics are just the rules for the game.
