Game mechanics

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever wondered what makes a game actually work? Every game uses something called game mechanics. These are the rules that guide every action a player takes. They also tell the game how to react to those actions.

Some people call these rules ludemes. A ludeme is a single part of play, like the L-shaped move a knight makes in chess. These mechanics work together to decide how hard a game is. They also shape how players interact with each other. Scientists and designers study these mechanics to make games more exciting.

Mechanics are not the same as the theme of a game. A theme is the story or the idea the game represents. For example, Monopoly has a theme of buying and selling property. However, the mechanics are just the rules for moving and trading. Two games might use the same rules but have different themes. Some games are even abstract, which means they have no theme at all. The game Go is a great example of an abstract game. When the mechanics and the theme do not match well, it is called ludonarrative dissonance.

There are many different ways mechanics can work. Some games use action points, which are like a budget for your turn. You might spend points to move a piece or draw a card. Other games use auctions or bidding. This is when players compete to see who gets to do a special action. In the game Ra, players must pay a resource to win a bid. Some games use dice to add an element of chance. Rolling one die is very unpredictable. Rolling many dice creates a bell curve, which can feel more fair to players.

Capturing is another very common mechanic used in many games. This is when you remove an opponent's piece from the board. You can capture a piece by jumping over it, like in draughts. You can also capture by surrounding a piece, which is how Go works. In some games, like Shogi, you can even take an opponent's piece and use it for yourself. This is called conversion. In video games, this might look like a kill count.

These different ways of playing make every game feel unique.

Games also use mechanics like resource management and crafting. Managing resources means keeping track of things like money, land, or points. In games like Minecraft, players use crafting to make new items. Crafting usually relies on set collection, where you gather specific items first. Some games also use different modes to change the experience. A sandbox mode lets you play freely without any set goals. A time attack mode makes you race against a clock. These different settings can change the rules or even the gravity in a game.
