Gameplay

Gameplay is the special way that people interact with a game.

It is the connection between a player and the game itself. This term works for both video games and tabletop games. It is not the same as the graphics or the audio. Instead, it is about how players follow rules to face challenges. This process involves many different types of behaviors.

Rules are what make a game work. G. Frasca identified three main parts to this system. First are manipulation rules that say what a player can do. Next are goal rules that define the purpose of the game. Finally, metarules define how a game can be tuned or changed.

These rules help create a series of linked challenges. Players use these rules to complete tasks in a simulated world.

This idea grew alongside video games in the 1980s. At first, people only used the word for video games. Now, the word is also used for tabletop games. Experts do not all agree on one exact definition. Some see it as a way to interact with a system. Others see it as a process between a player and a game. It is a way to describe how people act within a game.

There are many different types of gameplay to explore. Cooperative gameplay happens when two or more people play on a team. Other types include asymmetric, emergent, and nonlinear gameplay.

Researchers also study playability to see how good a game is. Playability measures how easy or how long a game can be played. It helps designers improve how a game feels to a person.

Scholars use different sets of rules to judge playability. Some look at satisfaction, learning, and efficiency. They also check for immersion, motivation, emotion, and socialization. Other researchers look at artistic or social facets.

This study helps make games better for everyone. By understanding these parts, people can make more fun experiences. It connects the way a game is built to how it is felt.
