An action game is a type of video game that focuses on physical challenges. These games test your reaction time and how well your eyes and hands work together.

You usually control a character called an avatar or a protagonist. This character must move through a level while collecting objects and avoiding obstacles. You might also have to battle enemies using natural skills or special weapons. Many games end with a boss fight against a very tough enemy. This boss is often a major part of the game's story.

Playing an action game often involves moving through many different levels. These levels are sometimes grouped into a themed area called a world. Some levels are linear, meaning they follow one path, while others are nonlinear. In nonlinear levels, you might find shortcuts or search for hidden secrets. These secrets could be valuable objects or even a hidden level. You might also find a teleporter to move to a new spot. Some levels use locked doors that require a specific key to open. You might even face a timer that adds pressure to your play.

Your avatar has different abilities to help you succeed. Most characters can move, jump, or maneuver through tricky spaces. They can also use attacks like punching or shooting to defeat enemies. Sometimes, you can find a power-up to improve your skills. A power-up might make you faster or give you a shield. Some games even let you spend points to choose your own upgrades. If enemies hit you, your character loses health or lives. When you run out of lives, it is game over.

There are many different styles, or sub-genres, of action games. Fighting games involve combat between pairs of fighters using martial arts. Beat 'em ups, or brawlers, involve fighting many enemies in a row. Hack and slash games focus on using melee weapons like swords. Platform games, or platformers, require jumping between platforms of different heights. Shooter games challenge you to aim at targets from a distance. These can be first-person or third-person games. Some shooters take place in space, while others use military settings.

Action games have changed a lot over the years. Early arcade games were often unbeatable and had no end. In those games, the goal was just to get a high score. Home video games are different because they usually have a clear goal. Players can often see the credits after they finish the story. Older games made you restart a whole level if you died. Newer games use checkpoints to let you start from a specific spot. This makes it easier to keep playing and learning from your mistakes.
