In video games, a boss is a very powerful enemy.

These computer-controlled characters act as major opponents for players. Most bosses are much stronger than the regular enemies you meet. They often have more health points to sustain damage. This makes them hard to defeat without a good plan. You might need to find a weak point to win. Many bosses are also much larger than the player character.

Boss battles are meant to be big, dramatic events. They often happen at the climax of a game section. You might find them at the end of a level. Some bosses even guard a specific goal or objective. These fights often use special music to feel grand. Some bosses even have their own unique theme music. They might even have theatrical scenes before or after the fight. These moments make the battle feel very important to the story.

There are many different types of bosses in games. A miniboss is a smaller boss in an area. They are weaker than the main boss of that level. A superboss is a much more powerful enemy. These are often optional and do not end the game. You might have to finish a sidequest to find them. Some superbosses are called raid bosses in online games. They may require a large group of players to work together.

Some games use very specific boss styles. A final boss is usually the main villain of a story. Defeating them often brings the whole game to an end. Sometimes a "true" final boss is hidden in a game. You might need special items like the Chaos Emeralds to find them. A wolfpack boss is a large group of enemies. They might be weak alone but strong as a pack. You must defeat the whole group to win the fight.

The idea of a boss comes from many places. It was inspired by martial arts films like those of Bruce Lee. In his film "Game of Death," he fought bosses on different levels. Video games also took ideas from tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons. The first video game with a boss fight was called dnd. It was released in 1975 for the PLATO system. Today, bosses appear in almost every kind of game. They even appear in rhythm games as very difficult songs.
