An open world is a special kind of virtual space in a video game.

In these games, players can move around very freely. You do not have to follow a single, straight path. Instead, you can choose your own goals and your own pace. This gives you a sense of autonomy. Autonomy means you have the power to make your own choices. You can decide how to face challenges in your own way. This makes the game feel like a simulated reality.

Making these worlds is a very big job for designers. They must balance player freedom with a good story. Sometimes, designers break a story into many small missions. Other times, they add side-missions that do not stop the main plot. To keep the world feeling huge, makers use level streaming. This is a way to load new parts of the game while you move. It helps you avoid long loading screens between areas. Sometimes, games use "loading tunnels" to give the computer time to work.

Some games use math to build their worlds. This is called procedural generation. It uses rules to create content instead of making it all by hand. This method helps developers make massive worlds much faster. For example, the game No Man's Sky used this to make over 18 quintillion planets. These planets have their own plants and animals to explore. Another game, Elite, used this to fit thousands of planets into a tiny amount of memory. This makes huge worlds possible even on older computers.

There are many different types of open-world games. Some are sandbox games, which give you tools to be creative. Most flight simulators are open worlds, but they are not sandbox games. This is because they let you fly anywhere but lack creative tools. You might see games like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption 2. Some games, like Assassin's Creed, use towers to show you the map. In the series Watch Dogs, players climb things to find new points of interest. These features help guide you through the large space.

People have been exploring free worlds for a long time. Early ideas started with arcade games like Jet Rocket in 1970. Text adventures like Colossal Cave Adventure in 1976 also offered free exploration. Today, games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offer huge maps. Players can explore mountains or oceans to find what they want. Whether you are playing a single-player game or a massive online one, the goal is the same. You get to discover a world that responds to your actions.
